Senior Cohousing Communities Directory

So far, more than a dozen senior communities have launched, and nearly that many more are being developed. A similar number are completed or in progress in Canada. At any given time, developing communities are in different stages of completion, and some may be on the verge of becoming “existing communities.” The information that follows is current as of February 2024.

Glacier Circle
Davis, CA

The first senior cohousing community in the nation, occupied since 2006. Members live in eight homes and enjoy dinners in the common house on certain days.

Mountain View Cohousing Community
Mountain View, CA

A new “old-fashioned” neighborhood of 19 homes on a one-acre site near downtown. Green spaces and outdoor walkways encircle the buildings.

Phoenix Commons

Oakland, CA

Located on the estuary waterfront, this 41-unit urban cohousing complex in the Jingletown Arts District has 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor common space. It is near a bridge to Alameda and its shops, cafes and other urban amenities.

Wolf Creek Lodge
Grass Valley, CA

Members moved into their 30-home, three-story energy-efficient building in October 2012. The rural-feeling, walkable location is close to many amenities.

Silver Sage Village
Boulder, CO

This community celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2017. It boasts lots of green spaces, gardens, a great view of the mountains and proximity to cafes and restaurants.

Hager Homestead (near completion)
Littleton, MA

Currently consisting of 26 households, this community purchased a 15-acre property in the small town of Littleton, northwest of Boston. Construction is almost finished, and they expect to move in during the first half of 2024. Members will live in clustered, energy-efficient homes and enjoy a common house, abundant open space, gardens, and a large outdoor commons.

NEW MEXICO

Sand River Cohousing
Santa Fe, NM

Originally called ElderGrace, this community with Buddhist origins has existed more than 10 years. The creative community includes a number of artists and musicians.

Valverde Commons
Taos, NM

Located on 10 acres adjacent to the heart of Taos, this community of 28 privately owned homes also includes a large common house and a barn with tools, a woodworking shop and space for projects. The historic Taos Pueblo is just up the road; the Taos Ski Valley 25 miles away, and Santa Fe 60 miles away.

NORTH CAROLINA 

Elderberry Cohousing
North of Durham and Raleigh, NC

Completed in 2017, this rural community includes 18 energy-efficient homes. It is located next to Potluck Community Farm, formed in 1990. Elderberry is for people who want to live in the country yet be just half an hour from Durham and its cultural activities.

Village Hearth Cohousing
Durham, NC

This LGBT-friendly community has 28 single-story homes in seven clustered buildings, located on 15 beautiful acres on the outskirts of this progressive smaller city. The community has many amenities, including almost 10 acres for natural open space, gardens, a dog park and outdoor activities.

OKLAHOMA

Oak Creek Community
Stillwater, OK

Twenty-four households live on 7.5 wooded acres in this university town. Paths connect buildings, raised-bed gardens and an adjacent creek. A large common house serves as an extension of everyone’s private living space and a place for meals, meetings, social events and more.

Heartwood Commons (nearing completion)
Tulsa, OK

Heartwood Commons is Tulsa’s first cohousing community. As a pocket neighborhood of almost five acres, it includes 36 private, energy-efficient homes, along with common amenities that support a healthy lifestyle and social connections. Construction is nearing completion, and community members expect to move in during the spring of 2024.

OREGON

PDX Commons
Portland, OR

This urban community lives in a four-story building with 27 units, a large interior courtyard and a rooftop “farm.” It is right on a bus line and near many amenities. The community started forming more than 10 years ago, and the building was completed in 2017.

Corvallis, OR

Still in its formative stages, this community plans to build private, low-rise homes around shared open spaces, following sustainable and ecological principles. In an urban renewal district, it will be on a bus line and within walking distance of shops.

Georgetown, TX

This community re-formed in 2019 after not being able to find affordable property in Austin. Georgetown is a small university town about 30 miles north of Austin. The community aims to acquire property in Georgetown and rehab/build, maintain and manage an affordable village for some 25 residents.

Abingdon, VA

This community of 29 homes has a spiritual focus, seeking to bring meaning, value and creativity to the aging process. It includes a common house and spirit center. It includes both owner-occupied homes and some income-qualified apartments for rent.

This relatively new community consists of 28 houses on a six-acre site in this vibrant town known for its Victorian architecture. It includes a shop, art studio and bocce court.

Shepherd Village
Shepherdstown, WV

This community of 30 households is located in tiny Shepherdstown, a historic university town dating to the 1700s — about a 90-minute train ride from Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Spacious private homes with small yards sit amid 14 acres of forested land with walking trails. The common house provides many amenities.

Located on a hillside overlooking Sooke Harbour at the southwestern tip of Vancouver Island, this 31-household community enjoys its proximity to the small town of Sooke and the surrounding natural beauty of the island.

This first senior-focused cohousing community in Canada consists of 21 households living in energy-efficient, attached units on four levels. Saskatoon is the cultural and economic hub of this central Canadian province.
